Business Owners, is it Time to Take Stock?
As we draw to the end of the year, it is only natural to reflect on the past 12 months – not only in our personal lives, but at work too.
As a business owner, your first thoughts might be to assess the performance of your company and your staff. But have you stopped to consider the productivity of your own day-to-day activities? Often business owners are so busy managing everyone else, they give little thought to such things. Yet your output is just as important as that of your employees.
For instance, do you actually know how you spend your working days? You might consider yourself to be a highly productive person, but the reality could be that you spend two hours travelling, two hours answering non-urgent emails and two hours dealing with admin. This leaves little time for the important stuff, like bringing in new business.
So, think again – can you safely say how much time you spend on each task, project or business matter? And is there a more effective approach you should adopt? If you don’t already know the answers to these questions, we suggest you find out. The results might just surprise you.
Business process mapping
That’s where business process mapping comes in.
Business process mapping is when you create a visual representation of your work processes. This provides complete transparency, letting you see an end-to-end workflow of your daily tasks. When you have this staring you in the face, you can suddenly see how many steps are needed to achieve a single goal. And it might be far more than you realise.
This was the case for one of our clients. Prior to meeting with us, she believed that her workflow consisted of about 20 steps. After we carried out a business process map, it became evident that it was actually 206 distinct steps. This exercise was a real eye-opener for her, and it might just be for you, too.
Once you are equipped with this kind of information, you can appreciate which tasks are eating up your time, and why. You can then act on this knowledge to make your business processes more streamlined. Ultimately, this will allow you to become more efficient, giving you time to spend on other, more important tasks.
Never enough hours in the day?
If you are a business owner, we highly recommend that you take stock – particularly if you feel like there are never enough hours in the day.
If you are wondering where to start, we can help. At i-systemise, we work alongside you to map your business processes. We then analyse the results, pinpointing whatever tasks are wasting your time. Once we have visualised the process, we use our expertise to standardise and automate your processes wherever possible. This is all part of our three-step model.
